Can anyone explain why religion has so much blood/misery on its hands, whereas Atheism does not?

Don't bother mentioning Stalin. You know I am talking about how religion (any religion) became synonimous with FEAR, torture, segregation/prejudice, rape (ethnic cleansing), and murder. How can religious people claim to be happy or good people when their faiths are inherently evil?

People use religion as an excuse to do atrocities to others.  Then you have the fanatics who truly think that they are doing the right thing, which is really scary.

Thoughts and beliefs are not themselves evil nor criminal.  It is rather the people who use those beliefs to their own ends in conflict with good sense and moral behaviour.  People who impose their vile will on others.  Therein is cause to fear.

People who are controlling and greedy for what other people have will use whatever they can to gain control.  In some instances that has included religion, which responsible historical analysis has shown.  In communists' case it's for the "good of the state" or whatever other reason.  You can't eliminate Stalin from your analysis, nor Mao, Pol Pot, etc. etc. as they did what they did in the name of the state, which is the same as atheism.  

It is NOT the faith that is evil, but rather the people who use the name of God or some other in order to get what they want.  If that's your excuse for being an atheist, it sounds like a fairly poor one.  That puts you in the Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot camp.

This is because religions are based upon - hatred. Is this a surprise? Let's see how?

Every religion hates another religion.

Every religion teaches to love & help only people of its domain not outside it (this happened because every religion was hijacked by selfish). And that is the problem. If hate is the inherent common factor in every religion , then bloodshed & misery is not far behind.

Note :- Above arguments do not apply to Buddhism.

I'm a lifelong atheist but there are many good qualities about religion.

Even thought I may not believe in God, it would be stupid of me as a logical, thinking being to COMPLETELY rule out that a god does not exist. It certainly is possible, even though it's not very likely to me and other like-minded people.
