If anyone can find a chess scene in a film, in which the phrase "checkmate" is not uttered, then I will buy them a whole carton of cigs. That is not a promise, that is a threat. No, wait a minute - it is neither a promise, nor a threat. It is a lie.

  1. Harry Potter -> I believe when they are playing chess around Christmas no one says Checkmate.  Just "That's Barbaric" "That's wizard's chess".

X-Men -> At the end of X-Men III and in the middle of X-Men II.

Wing Commander -> In the rec room before they make the jump to hyper-speed.  The jump causes the board to fly into the air and the game is never finished.

Bedazzled -> During the end credits the devil and angel are playing chess.

Two Weeks Notice -> Multiple scenes where chess is being played between the main characters... Including a round of strip chess after a party.

The link attached is a list of any movie with chess, but it doesn't say which say checkmate.

  2. Heavy smoker here. Last scene of "searching for bobby fischer" The little kid just knocks over his king, and the good guy says "trick or treat" whatever the h**l that means.  Camel lights pleeeeease.

  3. in the mini-movie before the movie, A BUG'S LIFE. one old dude plays against himself, gets himself in a checkmate, doesn't say it, fakes a heart attack, tricks himself by getting up quickly and switching the board around, and laughs to himself and walks away. super weird, huh. i m only 14, so I'll pass on the cigs.

  4. Searching for Bobby Fischer...

The whole dang movie is about chess i am sure there is a couple scenes in there that they dont say checkmate.

  5. Wow!  Looks like you're gonna need a truck to deliver those cigs!

Knights of The South Bronx also has some "Non-checkmate" chess scenes.

  6. X-Men 3 at the very end.

  7. You guys are all wrong....you don't even understand the question! You have to read between the lines, it is not what the question asks, but what it says.

    This is the correct answer:

Imagine if Garry Kasparov had been called Barry Kasparov. The world would be a very different place. In films, whenever chess is being played (slowly in a dark room), it is always clumsily used as a metaphor for some greater battle. The goatee'd villain smiles and twinkles his eyes as he moves his Queen (He is English and of dubious sexuality, so of course it is his Queen) to put our hero into check. But our hero (American, blue collar, think Bruce Willis in a vest) says something clever, narrows his eyes and with a smirk of contempt says: "I don't think so. Checkmate." And the game ends with the English villain glowering impotently at the board. This NEVER happens in real life. I should know, as I am an English villain myself...

  8. despite the thumbs down rating someone has given lnp163 Searching For Bobby Fisher fits the bill nicely.  I watch the movie on a very regular basis and though there are scenes where they do say Checkmate or Mate.  there are at least two scenes where it is not uttered.

    1) When Josh beats his dad his father says, "the game is over yet, Josh." and Josh answers "yes it is."

    2) When Josh wins the championship match at the end of the movie. His opponent Jonathan simply concedes the game and lays down his King.
