A pack of Jelly Treats jelly beans contains seven flavors: apricot, banana, coconut, date, eggplant, fig, and grape. When they eat them, the members of the Sweet family like to mix flavors. Apricot, fig, and coconut is Mr. Sweet's favorite combination. Date and banana is the mixture Mrs. Sweet likes the best. The twins love to mix all seven flavors at once, but Candy, the baby, likes plain eggplant. How many different combinations are possible with these seven flavors alone or mixed?

  1. Consider this as a binary problem.  For each combination, each flavor is either there (true) or not there (false).

That means it is all about powers of 2.

You have 7 flavors, so you can have (2^7)-1 combinations.

(The -1 is there because one of the 2^7 combinations would have all flavors not there.)
