Can anyone give me a rough estimate what it costs to move? I am moving less than 2 miles away and just want to hire someone to move the big furniture. I dont have too much to move....just a dresser, dining room table, china cabinet, desk, futon, and maybe a couch. Both houses have 2 stories where the furniture will need to be moved.

  1. You should contact multiple moving companies and request for FREE estimates before you select any particular company.  Your items are very typical of a house move so I don't foresee you paying too much money.  Just make sure you get multiple estimates.  A good starting point to search for local moving companies is http://www.movingcompany411.com  Good luck!

  2. I own and operate a website that allows you to search for moving companies.  There is also a section of the site that allows you to list a shipment in order to get bids from multiple moving companies.  Feel free to visit us at http://www.moversnshippers.com .

  3. I moved from an apartment back into my house after a remodel and it was one of the best ideas I ever had (as opposed to moving myself). I was moving the contents of a 2 BR apartment to the house about 10 miles away. I called a local moving company and they said they would give me three guys and a 33-foot truck. This would be $80 a guy, plus mileage. It came out to about $260 total. I then gave the guys an additional $40 tip between them.

These guys were awesome. They had furniture dollies, hand trucks, moving blankets and pads, and even wrapped things up in celophane wrap before moving certain items. When we got to the house, even though they had 15 steps to go up, they put everything exactly where we wanted it. They even moved some stuff from a storage outbuilding into the house (hence the $40 tip).

The whole thing took less than 4 hours. I was also not tired, sore, frazzled, and generally wiped out for the next few days, like I would have been if I had done it myself. It was definitely worth the $300 and I will never move myself again.
