They look like magickal seals/sigils for, perhaps, planetary spirits, or angels.  I've never seen these ones, exactly.  Another possibility is magickal script -- used to write out whatever.  Each symbol representing a letter of, say the English language.  You use the script in a ritual where communication with angels is desired, for example.

I don't see it as being particularly African, although i'm sure the magickal traditions there use somewhat similar methods.  I'm reminded of vevers from Voudon, an Afro-Haitian system. but i don't recall any of those shown being among the ones i've seen.
