I'm not sure which cave paintings you're referring to, but the most well-known are probably the cave paintings of Lascaux, France, which are approximately 30,000 years old. Most of the paintings there depict horses, but there are also images of bison, stags, bulls and other animals. The colors used are black, brown and an orange-rust color, and the paintings have quite a bit of detail. Perspective techniques are used, with animals in the foreground drawn much bigger than animals in the background. Animals also overlap, and movement, such as a herd running, is shown. They aren't simple by any stretch of the imagination, and are quite beautiful.
