So, i plan on moving to the USA from the UK in a few years after finishing my degree in film production and photography to start a career over there as a film producer and director.

What exactly happens in this process?

Has anyone moved from the UK to the USA? and if so how was it?

Is this as difficult as it seems?

  1. Ok...here is a dead serious answer...it is almost impossible for a U.K. citizen to live in, work in, or immigrate to the U.S.  Rather than re-type the info, I am putting a link below for you.  Please read all the answers, esp. the info given by Charlie and Wilsvil...and see the links given there too..

  2. what i would do is pick a good time to move because houses can be very expencive in aeras is LA. i allready live in the usa and it is fine but i also think the photography career would be fun because there are alot of beautiful spots in LA or in any part of america also

Maybe some other ideas of moving would be maybe to New York,Iowa and other great places and it is ok to move really no difficult!

  3. lol

  4. My mom moved from Ireland to the los angeles area.  I know she had a bit of a tough time at first but it's been almost 30 years and she is still here. If you really want to make the move you should go for it!  Just know that you will need some back up job because becoming a director is not gonna be easy.  Good Luck!

  5. My brother left London for LA when he was 19 with £200 in his pocket.

Lived in redondo beach at first working in a bar .

16 years of hard work later and now he is married with a very good job, has a home in Lake Tahoe , 2 houses in Hawaii and his main house in San francisco.

I would just go for it and do your best , America repays hard work and imagination well.

  6. The best I can tell you is that You Get What You Pay For In L.A..  Do your research first, and trust no one who says what they can do for you.  Sign nothing!  Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.  If it's to good to be true, it usually is.  Expect the unexpected.  Put it all in writing.  Trust no one.  Keep your mind on your money and you money on your mind.  I think you get the picture, but just remember most of all, THINK!!!!  If you follow these instructions everything will be OK.

Bye, the way for a few bucks, I can help :)

  7. get ready to be a PA for quite some time. even getting a PA gig can be difficult if you don't know someone. so basically...you'll be a college graduate working at the cheesecake factory like every other genius who comes here thinking they'll make it big.  there's actually more production going on in canada, nyc, louisiana, and boston for features now than there are in LA.  good luck.

  8. If you do run your car into a ditch, don't panic.  Four men in the cab of a four wheel drive with a twelve-pack of beer and a tow chain will be along shortly.  Don't try to help them.  Just stay out of their way.  This is what they live for.  That is some advice for when you move to the States.

  9. prepare to be fawned over cuz americans often think that accent is HOT.

if your ever in the midwest you can give me a call too ;)

  10. Yes, it is quite difficult indeed.

There are scam artists and scum everywhere in LA...there is crime and people are pretty rude. I would say that the best thing you can do is to lose your British accent and never trust anyone fully since even the best of people in LA are only looking out for number 1.

    Edit:

There are people in LA with Masters degrees who work at Star Bucks as baristas still waiting to make it big!

  11. I don't know about the immigration process.  I can tell you that you better get used to spending an inordinate amount of time in your car.  The public transportation system in LA is awful.  On the other hand, you won't get rained on as much.
