I bought a ticket to france for 1700 dollars with insurance but i need to figure out how i can get out of it and get my refund. I bought it through orbitz. What should I tell them? Do they need proof? I just had a change of heart....Does anyone have any experience with this? I could really use some advice, please....

  1. I formerly worked for one of Orbitz's largest competitors and heard this question all of the time. The simple answer is "sorry, but you're out of luck" unless your travel insurance covers buyer's remorse.  That's pretty improbable.

It's not usually up to Orbitz to decide if you can have a refund. The airlines normally dictate refund policies, not the travel agent or the website. And, they do not generally allow refunds on nonrefundable tickets except for the death of the traveler or immediate family member. Yes, the airline will require a death certificate.

That's a lot of money for an airline ticket to France. Are you sure that it's nonrefundable? If not, call Orbitz and ask. Perhaps it has a cancellation fee of less than 100% and you can get some of the money back.

If it is nonrefundable, then the airline is not going to give you a refund for changing your mind. I've had airlines refuse many refund requests for far better reasons than that. All that you can do is read your travel insurance policy carefully and see if there is some legitimate situation that it covers. Sorry, but that's how it works.
