You'd probably be surprised at how mundane most of the work is. We want people who'll tell us what's going on in a given place. As someone said, a lot of what they can do is look things up on Google.

We don't want other people do this to us, but we want to do it them. We pay people essentially to steal things from their government for us. Sometimes I think that's fine. Other times, it just gets to a level of pay for play.

The ideal clandestine agent is one no ones knows about and there's a cutout (circuit breaker) between the spy and the spy's handler.

There has been a long time war going on about whether active clandestine activity is of any use. We used it overthrow governments all over the world. It was cheaper than wars. But most of them have had blowback. So restraint is in order.

The one thing that is intolerable is leaking the name of a clandestine agent. To be precise, it's wrong to publicly identify any CIA agent or undercover agent. It is confined to clandestines. Any agent who was ever clandestine is a risk to many lives if someone leaks their name on the theory it's okay now because they're not clandestine. Plame was clandestine, but her being outed was not so dangerous to her (other than ruining her career) as it was to almost anyone who'd spoken to her in various countries.
