Well on Tuesday im trying out for the schools volleyball team. There are about 65-70 girls trying out, but only 12-14 make it. Many of my friends are trying out and I don't want to try to beat them out but i would be soo happy to make this team. I am pretty athletic i play b-ball soccer and lax. But the thing is im not very tall. But I know that some of the most sucessfull athleets weren't all tall. But from what I understand volleyball is naturally for taller people. Also, the coach is going to grade us on certain things. One of them being physical fitness. I can do 85 sit ups in a row but I stink at push ups. Any advice any will help!

Thanks so much in advance!

  1. As an ex volleyball coach I can tell you a good setter is just as important as the taller spiker. Practice your setting by going to a tennis court in your neighborhood or any fenced in playground. Practice a nice high set by trying to get the ball as high as the fence top send it both left and right. Next, practice your serve by putting a piece of rope in the fence at net level. Practice hitting just above the rope. Remember to spread the serve around and not hit to the same spot. But DO KNOW HOW IT SERVE TO THE SAME SPOT. Lastly, just practice with a friend digging the ball out. A team only needs a few spikers but good setters, servers and diggers win the game. The greatest spiker can't spike if the ball isn't ready for them.

Good luck and remember you can't build on the negative. Know your good points and concentrate on those. Your coach will help you with your weaknesses (coaches love to fix things LOL).

Lastly, if you don't make the team be the best cheerleader for them. The key to success isn't only a good team its good supporters.   :-) Coach Fry

  2. coaches look for spirit, :]

to keep the team pumped when in need.

    just focus and pay attention,.

  3. well you don't have to be tall in order to play volleyball. just pay attention to the ball. i know this for experience. i just finished volleyball season. if you want to do push ups well first practice on the wall. once you get used to it try them. if you want you could do girl push ups first. once you get the hang of them start doing them for real. and be confident. just think that you will be o the team. and you never know cuz it could come true. goos luck nin your tryouts and try your best. just don' t plan it because that is why people mess up.

  4. i play volleyball and the need to be tall is a total myth i am 5'5" and have been starting varsity for 2 years. you may not be a hitter if your shorter but there are other positions, i am a setter or most lobaros(cant spell) are shorter girls as well. i dont know exaclty how much u know about v-ball but id be glad to help you out if u ask more specific questions.

  5. I will be able to help you my sister had the same problem but she showed a lot of effort at the try outs by making diving attempts for the ball taking the leadership role and by talking to the coaches or judge now when talking to the coach make sure you introduce yourself befor doing the drill of there choice and make sure you keep your head up no frowns if you miss the ball keep going and say you can do it

  6. sounds like your pretty athletic; i also played many sports before volleyball. i think before tryouts; definately go buy a ball. go to a wall and set on the wall; start close then after 30, take a step back, then another. you say your short, so you most likely will play setter; so this will REALLY help you. take my word on it. good luck on tryouts (:

  7. I made the volleyball team and I'm not too tall [only like 62 inches]. But yeah you should DEFF google volleyball tips. It'll help a lot. But always keep your arms & hands together in a bump, set with your fingertips, serve with control, & spike with four steps! Good luck. I almost made club volleyball, like really close, but it's okay. Totally have a good tryout and stay motivated = ]

P.S ; help the coach! be very courteous = ] & also get knee pads... they help a lotttt girl!

  8. WELL, FIRST YOU NEED CONFIDENCE IN YOURSELF, YOU ARE YOUR WORST CRITIC. SECONDLY, YOU DON'T NEED TO BE TALL TO BE GOOD AT VOLLEYBALL. I KNOW  LOT OF GREAT VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS ON CLUB TEAMS WHO ARE VERY SHORT. YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING TALL, BUT IF YOU WORK HARD, YOU WILL SUCCEED.

    TIPS:

    - PRACTICE YOUR BALL CONTROL

*LABERO IS A GOOD POSITION FOR YOU. YOU DON'T NEED TO BE TALL YOU JUST NEED TO BE GOOD AT RECIEVING BALLS AND PASSING THEM DIRECTLY TO THE SETTER.

    - WHEN PASSING, MAKE SURE IT'S HIGH ENOUGH SO THE SETTER CAN MAKE A GOOD SET.

    - FOLLOW THE THREE STEPS TO BUMPING.

           * ALWAYS BE IN READY POSITION, A BALL CAN COME YOUR WAY AT ANYTIME. YOUR KNEES SHOULD BE BENT, AND YOU SHOULD BE DOWN AND READY.

           * KEEP YOUR HANDS TOGETHER AND STIFF.

           * DON'T SWING! THE BALL WILL BE HARD ENOUGH SO ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS MAKE A FORWARD MOTION TO YOUR TARGET.

I HOPE THESE TIPS HELP YOU GET ON THE TEAM, THEY SURE DID HELP ME!
