  1. The great biologists who influenced me.

Gregor Mendel was a genius working in more isolation that most other creative thinkers of his day. He came up with the idea of units of genetic inheritance. Mendelian genetics is the basis of all modern genetics.

Barbara McClintock proposed the basis of our current theory of horizontal gene transference. She claimed to feel that maize had movable genes. They laughed. She had to learn of  winning the Nobel prize over the radio (she had no telephone). This came after a gap of thirty years because it took the rest of the field that long to catch up.

Gilbert White pioneer of British Ecology. His book has been continuously in print since 1789 and is one of the most well read books in Britain. I must admit I have even made the pilgrimage to his home in Selbourne to see where he worked.

Beatrix Potter was far more than a writer. She contributed to the pioneering work on lichen symbiosis even though she was a self-taught amateur. Her scientific illustrations of fungi & lichens were so accurate they were used until modern times. Because she was an amateur she could get no notice of her theories at the time and he paper had to be presented for her to the Linnaean Society in 1897 because women were not allowed. Her uncle, Sir Henry Roscoe,  presented it. http://www.astr.ua.edu/4000WS/POTTER.htm...

Rachel Carson brought the world up short with her book 'Silent Spring' about the dangers of DDT. The risk to human health came to public attention and her book impacted the course of American history just as 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' by Harriet Beecher Stowe once raised awareness of slavery's cruelty.

Rosalind Franklin died before she could be awarded the Nobel for discovering the structure of DNA. Nobels are not awarded posthumously but it is acknowledged by all who work in the field that she earned it.
