It made a very big difference if you were someone that his government liked, or someone that his government did not like.

I remember when I was young, we had in school a girl who was an exchange student from Chile, and she told everyone that she loved Pinochet because the previous government (Allende) would send the police to people's homes with flame throwers. People who were liked by the government were given good jobs and like the above were helped to believe that their lives would be in jeopardy the moment Pinochet was gone.

On the other side, if your family had been involved before Pinochet in any sort of labor action or any sort of political action, you were in very deep trouble indeed.
