  1. I answered your other post.  People live out in the burbs like Cypress to get away from the crime of living in Houston (although crime is everywhere).

Until they build a high speed commuter train, traffic will be a bear from there to town.  If you don't need to worry about driving far to get to work, it's a very nice place to live.

  2. Cypress isn't one of the greatest places to live. Schools are mediocre (I have cousins that go to CFISD.. Let's just say their parents are moving out of the district..) and shopping/attractions are non-existant. I don't really have a problem with Cypress.. It's just very close to 'bad' areas and it's starting to flow into Cypress and Spring Branch area. The only real attraction I can think of is Willowbrook mall.. But if you want real 'world class' shopping this wouldn't be the place for you. Cypress is also REALLY far away from anything fun at all.. Like the galleria, NASA, museum district, ect ect.

If you are looking to live in a up and coming area with GREAT schools and shopping close to Houston area attractions I would check into Sugar Land and The Woodlands. These areas are INCREDIBLE and near Houston without having to worry about the 'bad' parts creeping into it.

The only REAL reason why I would ever consider moving to Cypress would be that you can get a pretty impressive house without hitting the bank too hard.. But the type of people that will be you're neighbors seem kind of scary. (Mostly hicks or 'thugish' types..)

I'm sorry if this wasn't what you were looking for but I've been a Houstonian all of my life and know Houston like the back of my hand.. If you have any questions that you need answered or need an opinion feel free to message me. I wish you the best of luck, and happy house hunting. : )

  3. Well the Cypress Fairbanks School District (CFISD) is among the largest and best (academically speaking) in Texas.

The closest mall is about 30 minutes away (Willowbrook Mall), but there is a local large commercial area with several stores, (like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, HEB, Randals, etc) restaurants, and a relatively new movie theater.

There are many new neighborhoods being built in the area.  It was only around 10 years ago that most of it was a forest.

There is also a US club swimming team located there that I used to swim for called Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club (aka The Fleet) that is one of the country's top ten teams.  Back in 1999, they built an olympic sized pool in Cypress, where they practice and offer swim lessons.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!  Hope this helped!

  4. Speaking of schools (CFISD), you need to stay away from the Cy-Spring High and Langham Creek High attendance zones (zip code 77433).  Overall, area north of hwy 290 has better schools.

There are a lot of flood plains in Cypress.  So please check efloodmap.com before you decide to buy properties in the area.

Stores are mostly concentrated along hwy 290.

Traffic on hwy 290 is "terrible" during peak hours and will probably get worse.

South Katy area is better than Cypress.

  5. The school system there are terrible. I went there and I wouldn't take my children there. There are so many broken family kid there and its really sad because Drugs are so easy to access. Counselors don't care about the students, they just try to make it till the end of the day every day.  Although there is plenty of diversity, this would be the only reason why I look back at school. Other than this school was not helpful for my education and learning confidence. But I love Trader's Village (flea market).  There is just so much to do there.

There is Windfern High school which will allow your teenager to graduate early, but majority of student are kid out of rehab and pregnant teens. You have to be a junior to go to Windfern. There is a High school across Taders village ( I forgot the name ) its fairly new and it looks just like Cypress springs High School. But I've been to all of the High schools, and through Summer School. What I can say is that Its easy in some classes, no studying required but you really don't get inspired or learn anything. Then when you take the TAX test, majority of them fail. Majority of the kids who graduate from cypress-fairbanks school systems go to community colleges. Katy school district could be better but I never went there I can couldn't tell you. Willowbrook mall is just a few miles away from Windfern High School, and its not the greatest mall but it does have a nice pet store.  Westaoks mall/Sharpstown are known for being ghetto and run down. Memorial is turning out to be pretty nice. But everyone loves to shop at Galleria MALL. Then there is KatyMills mall which is an outlet mall, they don't even have victoria secret and this is why I don't go there. Galleria is suppose to be the best in Houston.

    Enjoy

  6. Cypress Fairbanks has always been known for having an excellent school district.  I live in Cypress and have sent three children thru school.   In my opinion the district is above average, but I feel like they are getting way to big.  My fear is the bigger they get,  they will not beable to withold the reputation.  Coles Crossing, Bridgeland, Sydney Harbor, etc. are all beautiful subdivisions.  Longwood is a bit older, but the layout of the community and the ammenities are above average.  The homes hold a high value.  All the neighborhoods you mentioned are all zoned to the better schools in Cyfair, but please do your research.  Some of the subdivisions have been transferred from one school to another, and then back to the 1st one again.   I know the kids also have been transferred back in forth in the higher grades as well.  The traffic on Spring Cypress, where some of these subdivisions are, in my opinion  is a bit much.  Look for alot of construction in the near future.  Good luck with your hunt, and if you don't find what you are looking for in cy fair, Spring Klein is also very nice, as well as Spring.

  7. Cypress is pretty much the same as every other suburb in America. It is spread out, dominantly white, and far away from any attractions or big activity (which is pretty much all in the innercity area).

There isn't much to say about the schools. They are like every other suburban town's schools.

As for shopping, there is Willowbrook mall but that is even a bit of a ways away and it is nothing special at all compared the majority of malls in the US. It has the same things as all the others. There is a giant grocery store in Cypress, though, and it has quite a large selection. It is an HEB.

There are no attractions. There are parks that have swings and small ponds. Borrrring.

All of the houses pretty much look the same as in every suburb, although Cypress does have it's parts that cater to the trailer park and KKK set. There are quite a few hicks in Cypress as compared to nearby Houston.

Living in Cypress you will almost certainly have an unnecessarily long commute to your job as most jobs are located within the city of Houston proper. With high gas prices this really is not something you'll want.

If I were you I would move into the innercity area. There is great shopping (Galleria, Memorial City, Rice Village, Montrose), better attractions (Hermann Park, Memorial Park, NASA/Johnson Space Center, Museum and Theater Districts, etc), GREAT dining, and altogether just WAY more stuff to do.

No, it isn't a warzone like most suburban white people seem to think it is (along with every other urban area).  I grew up in Houston and have never had problems.
