Can anyone give me information on using a vocoder?

i know someone who records & makes music. i want to get them a program or something to make their voice sound like tpain (i really dont have a clue what im talking about exactly) but i looked online and it says that tpain uses a vocoder? what is it? can anyone tell me if that would be a sensible thing to buy this person or if theres a simpler way? thankyou

i think he acctually uses auto-tune not a vocoder
