Question:

Can anyone give me some cool 19th century male names?

I'm writing a story and I'm currently using "Wilson" as a last name (but if you can suggest any better 19th century surnames I'd be happy to hear it!) I really like names from like 1800-1950 because they're so uncommon but the top male names are either all the same (will, john, dave, etc.) or sound like last names. Anyone have any cool name suggestions that aren't common of today? Thanks!

  5. Click this web link for an explanation of popular Victorian-era first names:

Biblical names and the names of heroes were popular choices of many parents, although they also usually named children after family members.   Since Wilson is a Scottish or Scots-Irish surname, you might use some names popular with Scots: Archie (for Archibald), Hugh, Lochlan, and Neil.  Some other 19th-century names I've run across that certainly aren't popular today include Asa and Gideon.

Some parents also gave their sons the names of popular heroes:  Andrew Jackson, George Washington, and Lafayette were popular names for American boys in the early part of the 19th century.

  6. You can use the 1880 US census, 1881 UK Census or 1881 Canadian census to see real names.

Enter a first name, like "John" and leave the last name blank to see last names. Reverse, with Smith or Jones or Miller to see first names. You can set the birth year to 1845 with a range of 10 years to see middle-aged men, 1865 (+/- 10) for boys and 1820 (+/- 10) for geezers.

Yancy ... The name is also used to honor a Southern proslavery politician of the 19th century

Wyndham ... Place name. Used as a first name in the 19th century

Squire ... Occupational name. Mostly 19th-century first name use.

You wanted unusual?? How about  Shaka ... The name of a Zulu tribal leader (sometimes compared to Attila the Hun) who shaped a group of tribes into the great Zulu nation in the early 19th century.?? (pronounced as .SHAH-kuh)--the TV miniseries was FANTASTIC. It was called "Shaka Zulu" and told how he rose from near-slavery to lead the Zulu nation in Africa.

.Rawlins ... which were revived in the late 19th century as a given name.

Last, but not least, but not on the website above--from "Gone With The Wind", I always have liked the name RHETT for a man. The website has 48 pages of men's names, and 34 pages of girls' names--as first name or surname. Click the blue name to go to a longer description of it.

PS  How about RHETT JACKSON for a character name?? (Writer's Digest magazine always suggests for a strong hero-type character--in body and spirit-- to always use a 1-syllable first name and 2-syllable surname).

  8. I like Biff. No reason, I just do. Biff Wilson sounds especially cool..
