The second link demonstrates a horse trying to breath with heaves(COPD chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), a classic presentation, what you'll see....video...

I had a great old quarter horse gelding who had heaves(back in the sixtys)....he'd had a rodeo life before I bought him; and, at the time, did not demonstrate any shortness of breath, wheezing or any other difficulties while breathing.  His problem arose during the summertime...dust, and any dusty hay were is undoing.  We kept his stall and his hay sprinkled down, kept good ventilation in our barn,  and were able to stay ahead of his symptoms.   Dust, mold,  and damp old barns(poor drainage) all contribute to the problems of a horse with COPD.

We were lucky with him; many horses now require additional meds to stay ahead of heaves.

  2. a pony i once knew had this problem. but it was only when she was really working. when she got into a frame for dressage, and after about five minutes of solid trotting, she would being wheezing. and ocassionally when she was just standing whilst being groomed, she would also start wheezing. we had to give her some cough medicine for it.  oddly enough, when she runs, she doesn't wheeze, even though that's more work than trotting i would assume.

  3. the horses i've known with emphysema (heaves) cough when they work, and sometimes appear to choke.  the lung sounds are wheezing noises.  usually it is caused by being in poorly ventilated barns with dusty, moldy feed and dusty bedding.

the bronchioles in the lungs are inflamed and swollen, and the bronchial muscle spasms, so it's hard to get air in and out of the lungs.  It is progressive, but good ventilation and feeding practices can help improve the horse's breathing.

  4. Do you have a weezy horse?

  5. I had an AQHA mare back in the 80's who was emphasemic.  Blue Handy I'd known her whole life and she was in her 20's when I ended up with her.  HAD to have her hay wet down in order to breathe and eat at the same time.  IF there was any dust in her stall she'd start in with the heaves.  Once you wet down her stall and her feed, she was fine.
