  1. Ride no stirrups- you'll hate your instructor for asking you to do this, but it really helps you out, two point position, two point with no stirrups.

If you want to excersive your horses muscles in his hind end, try walking up and down hills, trot up and own hills.

  2. Yoga! Pick up yoga, it helps tremendously with balance strength and most importantly muscular endurance which is really what you need for your core and legs.

I run alot as well, but I find the yoga, and my situps, crunches, squats the best thing.

In the saddle, there's quite a lot. 2-point will reinforce a good foot position(done correctly) and builds calf and core muscle. No-stirrup work will really work your thighs, and then combine the two and try two point without stirrups(oh, I was hating life when my trainer made me do this). If you really want to be sore, have someone put you on the lungeline, drop your stirrups and trot around for five minutes in 2 point without stirrups or reins.

There are also yoga books made specifically for horseback riders..
