My boyfriend and I are looking to get ont rack financially and are confused on where we should start. We want to buy a house soon, but our credit just downright sucks. I filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and his credit just needs some help. I also just graduated college and will need to start paying back student loans soon... but I have not been able to find a job yet. We have looked into some of the things we need to do in order to buy a house, we're just not sure where to start. We do not have the money to pay someone to direct us, so if any of you have any suggestions on where to turn or maybe some good websites to check out for advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Real estate prices have decreased a lot (although they are expected to decrease more in the next year)..................but you don't have to buy a house.   Nothing wrong with renting, especially in your situation when you don't have the money to buy a house.

& when you own a house, you still pay rent on it.....in teh form of property taxes, insurance, and possibly maitenance.

Be sure to pay down those student loan debts as soon  as possible.......and also save a sizable amount of money from every paycheck.  Don't live paycheck to paycheck......save and build.

  2. step 1 get a job

step 2 pay off student loans

step 3 save a down payment

step 4 while doing the above treat your credit rating carefully

step 5 once you have a down payment saved, your credit shoudl be much better.

  3. There is a new website in the works to help people in your situation. The site is in beta-testing right now. You can try it out for free, but feedback is appreciated. Check it out at www.vilkri.com.

It works like this. You enter some data about yourself and your finances, but nothing that identifies you as a person. Then the system looks at your individual situation and makes suggestions if necessary. It does so by giving you reports that are easy to read.

  4. Run a credit report and find any errors from there for fixing/cleaning it.

    Good Luck!
