Question:

Can anyone give me some step-by-step instructions for replacing the ferrule on my cue?

I recently replaced my tip. It was the first time I did it so I got a little messy with it. Now there is dried cement and chalk stuck to the ferrule and it looks awful. I want to replace the ferrule and put another new tip on it. Practice makes perfect you know. Any tips for me?

  1. Tips take practice to replace.  I wouldn't even try to replace a ferrule.  For the high end cues, they are usually threaded on, so there's shaft wood going through the center of it, sometimes all the way through, or sometimes it's capped.  If it's not threaded, it's well glued, so you'd need a lathe to strip away the ferrule from the outside.

If you want to practice re-tipping, I'd suggest finding some cheap cues you don't mind messing up.  See if a local pool hall will let you re-tip or sell you their house cues for cheap.  Make sure you have a sharp blade, steady hand, and use less glue ;^)  I've just started doing this myself.  Mine don't look spectacular so I might have a pro do them when I need it, but they're tough to find around here.

  2. Sounds like you may need a new one. but I never could work good with Glue or cement.
