Temecula!  Not sure why it got a thumbs down.  It may not be large in comparison to San Diego but neither are any of the other cities on the way.  Just do a mapquest search and you'll see.  Temecula is just about half way.  It's a great answer.

Depends on which way your coming from? there's Oceanside,Escondio,Carlsbad, or El Cajon many more there are more large towns if you go all theway to the 15 through Riverside
