Can anyone give me tips on researching my family tree? I seem to have come to a full stop. Good web sites?

I have trouble interrogating census results etc. What are the best questions to ask? Which are the best web sites to use? Are there any free useful sites? Are BMD sites a good route to follow?

Is it possible to access parish registers via the internet?

Thanks for your help.

  1. go to Ancestry.com

  2. Ancestry.com is the one that I use, it's pretty good!

  3. www.genesreunited.co.uk

  4. Here are sites that I use several times a week, I have them bookmarked and have found them VERY helpful:

    www.familysearch.org

    www.ancestry.com

    http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

    www.google.com

    www.cyndislist.com

You might be surprised to see Google in my list, but I have found that once I learned the boolean rules, Google (or any search engine, really - - try Google AND MSN AND Yahoo as they do list their results differently!) is a major tool in family history research.

Here's a link to more info about making your search engine give you the most pertinent results:

  5. ancestry.com (or .co.uk) is one of the best sites and www.findmypast.com is very good, Both are subscription sites.

Have  a look at www.familysearch.org which is the site of the Mormon church, there are a lot of transcriptions from parish registers, and it's free to use, also try www.rootsweb.com.

    Good luck and good hunting

  6. Parish registers are not generally available on the net. Although the Mormons run a huge database that contains some. I use Genesunited website because its easy to use and not too expensive if you know the location of your ancesters places of birth/death you can access all the relevant registers and search fairly easily.

  7. This summer I am doing the same thing. Reserching family.  Ancestry .com may help.  I used it for the 2 week free trile, and It did find my grandpa.  So it may help you.

  8. The best place to start is with your self.  That will give you your parents names and where they were born.  From there order their death (if they are dead) their marriage cert. then their birth certs.  You will find a lot of information on them.

You have to keep in mind that not all information even on birth or death certs. are correct either.  I have found many problems even with them.

Speak with your grandparents if they are still alive.  Check Family Bibles.

With the census pages look on at least 2 pages before and 2 pages after.  You might be able to find family members living near them.  They could be siblings, Aunts, Uncles etc.  Check different spellings also.  The census takers might have spelled the name differently ie Dooley, Duley, Doly, Doley, etc. They can be of the same family.  Depending on the accent of the person giving the information.

If you go to www.rootsweb.com you might find somewhere to start.  Others might be working on the same people.  But you have to remember CHECK ALL SOURCES OUT FOR YOURSELF.  Don't depend on their work being correct either.  They might be coping other's work as theirs and it could be wrong.

The Mormon sit that others are siting is http://www.familysearch.org
