  1. its like survival of the fittest or best man wins..stuff like that

ex:a cheatah is about to spring on a herd of grazing horses....they all see it and start to run...some of them are faster and they escape and some of them are slower and they become dinner...that is genetic selection becuase the slower horses didnt have the appropriate genes to survive...

basically what it is is having the right personality and attitude and looks to survive in your inviroment...

  2. Genetic selection is the selection for genetic traits that are deemed as desirable (or to avoid genetic traits that are undesirable).

Many examples exist when genetic diseases are involved.

Cystic fibrosis is an erroneous gene on chromosome 7 with many consequences. If parents have already had a child with cystic fibrosis, they may not want the burden of having another child with CF, so genetic selection can be used to screen out embryos that have the CF gene.

Haemophilia is a bleeding disorder on the X chromosome. If the parents do not want their child to have haemophilia (provided they know they have the genes and therefore are at risk) then they may screen the embryo for the gene and select only embryos that do not have the haemophilia gene.

However, controversy arises because people are effectively judging that these children are "not acceptable". Furthermore, there might be other problems such as people selecting for "smarter", "fitter", "stronger" children in the future (even though genes for these have not been discovered yet).

[Ed: The other form of genetic selection is paralleled with environmental selection, where certain genetic traits are selected for superior survival in a particular place.

Examples include when homo sapiens (humans) and homo neanderthalis coexisted. Many predators existed but the theory is that homo sapiens had bigger brains (hence greater intelligence) and better communication - hence homo neanderthalis became extinct, while homo sapiens were genetically selected to be superior and pass on their genes.

    Other examples are:

White moth and brown moth in a forest of trees with pale barks. The brown moths can be easily seen by predators while the genes that code for the white, paler moth will survive.

A bird of prey may fly faster than another bird whose genes mean that they don't fly as fast. The slower bird will have a greater risk of being killed before it can pass on its genes while the faster bird have a greater chance of being selected to survive.

    and so on...]
