  1. GD173's got it right. When I was on exchange in Japan we went straight from school to our chosen club activity, then ate dinner in the dining hall with our club. I was in "International Club" which was a drama club.

  2. There's not really alot to know.

Most Japanese schools have some kind of club activities for their students after school. These can be sports activities (baseball, basketball, rugby, judo, kendo), creative/cultural activities (art, music, tea ceremony, English/International stuff) or others (student radio, computers, etc.)

Club participation is optional and students can pick the club they like but all students are encourage to participate in something. Usually, these clubs are taught by teachers who might have special training/skills or just practice a certain activity as a hobby.

Even though every can participate in a club, there's usually some kind of hiearchy based on year in school (regaedless of actual ability). So you get the whole Sempai-Kohai experience. Underclassmen do the tidying up and all of the manual labor while upperclassmen run things on behalf of the teacher.

For schools that are very competitive in sports, usually only the best players (regardless of year in school) are selected for official games but all of the club members participate in practices other non game related activities.

You can find out more about Kendo at

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kendo.

Kendo is just like any other club. Students practice and practice and practice usually for some kind of tournament or event.

  3. Lol. After school they go to cram school for several more hours >.>
