My husband and son are just taking my 8 year old budgie to the vet. I fear he is going to be put to sleep. He has been ill for a while, not being able to fly and his feet/legs have had arthritis in them. About an hour ago I called the vet at he just sits on the floor now panting. They have just gone to the vet with him............. can anyone help me feel better? I love animals with a passion and hate to think he is being put to sleep, but also hate to think of him in pain!

No sarcastic answers please, some of us really love our pets.

  1. If the worst happens, and your budgie doesn't make it, try to find comfort in the fact that he spent 8 loving years with you and your family. I look upon my pets as friends and I plan on celebrating their life when they pass, instead of mourning their death...hugs to you

  2. When my budgie died, and he wasn't as old as yours, I concentrated on the thought that he had had a very good life.  We never locked him in his cage.  He was left to fly around all day whilst we were at work and at night we only had to put his cover on his cage and he went straight in and on his swing to sleep.  He was obviously very happy with his lot.  I am sure that yours was loved and happy as well.

  3. You poor darling! I know how hard this must be for you! Just remember that he loved you and you gave him a good home! He's in a really good place now with a bunch of other little budgies. God is going to take care of him. He wouldn't want you to be crying over him! He's happy and he's in an amazing place. The best thing you can do for him is to pray to him and tell him you love him. In time, the ache will go away and you may be able to get yourself another budgie. I hope you feel better!

  4. This poem helped a lot when I lost my Sylvester.

    Lend Me A Bird

"I will lend to you for a while, a bird", God said. For you to love him while

he lives and to mourn for him when he is dead.

Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,  or maybe for two or three. But will you,

till I call him back, take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief,

You'll always have his memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise that he will stay, since all from earth return,

But there are lessons taught below I want this bird to learn.

I've looked the whole world over  in search of teachers true.

And from the folks that crowd life's land, I have chosen you.

    Now will you give him all your love; nor think the labor vain;

Nor hate me when I come to take my lovely bird again?

I fancied that I heard them say, "Dear Lord, thy will be done,

for all the joys this bird will bring, the risk of grief we'll run."

Will you shelter him with tenderness?

Will you love him while you may?

And for the happiness you'll know forever grateful stay?

    But should I call him back much sooner than you've planned;

Please brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.

If, by your love, you've managed, my wishes to achieve,

In memory of him you've loved; be thankful; do not grieve.

Cherish every moment of your feathered charge.

He filled your home with songs of joy the time he was alive.

Let not his passing take from you those memories to enjoy.

"I will lend to you, a Bird", God said, and teach you all you have to do.

And when I call him back to heaven, you will know he loved you too.

  5. Budgies are so sweet. Mine used to whistle to the same tune of the microwave.

If he is indeed in pain, you know what the best choice is.

And as hard as it sounds, eventually try getting another budgie that will guaranteed make you smile again, and you'll feel a lot better.

  6. Sorry, but he is obviously in pain and should be put to sleep.  If you genuinely love animals (and him) you wouldn't want him to suffer.  This is a good chance to talk to your son about life and death and loss and how you will always remember what a good friend he was.  Watch your wording if he is young since he may associate "going to sleep" with death; probably not since he is eight.  Do it as a family and with care and leave time to grieve before getting another pet.

  7. Don`t feel bad,you wouldn`t want him to suffer.Eight is a good age for a budgie. My Dad bred them when we were younger and we saw many come and go.But you always will have feelings and good memories of him,so think on them when you feel sad.

If you are like me you say you won`t get another, but you will!!Love it as much as the one you have just now and you and your family will soon cheer up!

  8. I am so sorry!!!

If it makes you feel any better,  2 of my birds died on the same day,  September 23,  and I was so sad I cried all week and cursed that day.  The birds names were Lilly and Tweety.  :-[ :( They were pareektets.  (Sorry can't tipe wel to sad im crying and my hand are shaking)

  9. Well the good LORD may need another angel in heaven today, but rest asured your bird will be in a better place if it does passaway. I know if your bird has been sick for a while now, it is better for it to go to heaven then to be here on earth suffering. And instead of looking at getting another to REPLACE your bird, get another bird IN MEMORYof your bird.
