Question:

Can anyone help me find information on Dr.Phil's show where he called homeschoolers "unsocial"?

I remember hearing about the incident when it happened, but having some direct quotes of what he said would be helpful in my report. I'm reporting on the stereotypes of homeschoolers and have need to refer to this occurence, but without accurate knowledge of what was said, I'm afraid I can not justly use this example.

  1. I think you might be looking for the great school debate. I went to Dr. Phils homepage and looked up home school in the archives.

  2. Actually I saw a show of his back about a year ago, one of the few I've actually watched because it was about homeschooling, and he said homeschooling was a good idea in the elementary years but that he didn't think it was good in high school.

While I completely disagree that it's not good in high school, never once did he say anything out homeschoolers being unsocial.

  3. Dr. Phil is an Idiot of he said that!

Most homeschoolers are very polite, considerate and social.

Dr. Phil either hasn't done his research or turns a blind eye to Columbine and other school shootings in which students are ESTRANGED by other students.

  4. I didn't see the show, but there was information about it  floating around the homeschooling community here in our area.  As I understand, he put the homeschooling family he was interviewing in a very bad light.  His staff led them to believe the tone of the interview would be one way and he took it down a much more "sensational" path.  And as I understand, the audience was specially invited and made up mostly of local high schoolers.  He apparently kept asking the audience how they felt and of course they cheered when the questions referred to the "wonderful" state of publicly schooled children, and affirmed his negative tone when homeschooling was discussed.  Again though......second hand knowledge.

To be fair, in another show that had an episode on homeschooling, Dr. Phill stated that homeschooling to 8th grade had no negative effects on socialization (much to the dismay of many regular posters in this forum), but after that age, he thought they were best served in more traditional settings . (sorry, Doc! I disagree)

  5. If you have any idea which episode it was from, you can probably order a transcript of the episode from his website... other than that, I don't know, sorry!
