Can anyone help me hand train my parakeet?

We've had Henry for a while now. He's probably about 5-7 months old now. I pleaded and pleaded and pleaded my parents for him, and I have to admit, I've sort of neglected to teach him anything, like how humans are friendly, and that he should trust us, because of my grades. Now that it's summer, I've been thinking about trying to teach him how to perch on my finger, take food from my hand, etc., ("hand training" him), but at this point, he doesn't respond to any of the directions online articles on hand training give me, and I can't find many articles on teaching a somewhat older bird. Any tips?

  1. Well what you should have done was train it when you first got it. But seeing how he knows you for 5-7 months now...i think your bird will have trouble being trained. You have to make it trust you, so try sticking your hand in the cage slowly and talk soothingly. Do this when you change the food and water everyday. If its safe for you to handle the bird, then stick your finger out and say, "Up!"  being gentle yet firm. DO that for maybe a few weeks and hopefully it will understand that you're not a threat. Once you and him are on good terms, let him out and fly around... goodluck
