Let's start with the mean, which you probably used to call the average. Add all the data and divide by the number of entries and you have the mean. The median is the 50th percentile. Half the entries are higher and half are lower. The mode is the most common entry.

If you have a symmetrical distribution, such as a normal or binomial distribution, the mean, median, and mode will be the same.
