Someone I know from the RAF has recently gone over to Afganistan and I was just wondering on average how long does it take them before they manage to get into contact with you? I do not know how long it takes to get to Afganistan or how long it takes for them to get their communication lines set up e.g. internet, phone cards, or whether they're only allowed to contact people on certain days.

I would be most grateful if someone can give me their experience or views on how long and how often I should expect to hear from him.

I'm just asking cos I really miss him and it's only been three days.

  1. Well I will be going out there in some time soon but all I know is that he would be out there for 6 months max, sorry :(

  2. Don't know about the RAF, but depending on the nature of one's mission communication can be pretty free, or nonexistent. My last deployment was a 'operations base' that only has numbers for identification purposes, outside communications just were not allowed other than snail mail, and that was all censored before bieing posted.

  3. I was on tour in Afgahn for 4 months. When I got there I had to settle in, patrol, get to feel the area. Before I knew it was sunday 5 days later and I was told that sunday at 4pm (British time) was my slot for the phone. I had 20 mins a week, at that time, unless there was special circumstance. Just give it a week, believe me he'll be on the phone soon and chatting to you with stories and all sorts.

  4. Three days is still kind of soon.

Being fresh over there there is alot he has to do to settle in, job, accommodation and stuff like that.

He'll get in contact with you as soon as he can. Why not spend the time while you wait writing him a nice letter. They really like getting that stuff. The internet is great for instant chats and such but nothing beats a letter from home especially from a loved one.

Don't worry give him time to settle in and he'll be chatting with you soon enough.
