hi

i have a rabbit, he is about 2 years old and he is healthy and a great pet. but i was just wondering if anyone could give me advice on if to get him a companion (neutered female) and how to better his diet and life??

he lived inside until we got a hutch and he is now living outside in his hutch in a part of the garden that doesn't get too hot or too cold. he is fed on shop brought food every day and once a week he gets a carrot and a lettuce leaf. he has water all the time. he gets interacted with daily and is given time to run around

  1. he needs greens more than once a week. you can also get some brown bread and toast it a bit and feed him it, they love that. you also shouldn't give them lettuce leaves it makes them bloaty and uncomfortable. my rabbit used to LOVE sugar beet, they're quite hard to find but if you feed them a little slice of it they get a bit hyper and run round for hours.

to keep him occupied in the garden you can try making a bunny assault course out of tubes and boxes, they like jumping up on things and crawling through tubes.

sorry i don't know anything about intriducing companions.

  2. I think it should be alright to introduce him to another companion but you might not be able to let him/her live in the same cage as your other rabbit straight away, you might need to let them get to know each other first. To help his life style you could get a run and attach it to his cage, he might like a flag stone in there so he can wear down his claws and some grass as they love it. He also needs more greens than once a week, it should be every day. It is also better not to give them lettuce because it can make them ill. They love cucumber, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower leaves, apple and more. Look for some information sheets on the internet to find more vegetables they can eat.

  3. All rabbits should have a companion where possible. They are sociable animals.

Introduce a young adult doe who is fully mature and neutered from a animal shelter/rescue centre. adult does vary in temperament, these temperaments you do not see in young rabbits and at maturity temperaments could clash.

Make sure you introduce hem in neutral territory.

As for the diet, it is very poor and lettuce should not be fed

Rabbits should have a variety of fresh food else they end up with disease and brittle bones.

They should have a good pellet diet to accompany the food to promote good teeth (not mixed muesli) and plenty of hay for a good digestive system.

see my site for what you can feed your rabbit

  4. Just WikiPedia It.

I'm sorry i didnt provide more information, but my previous answer took over 30 minutes and it was all dribble.

  5. ummm...

the best way to let your rabbit to chose a good prospective buddy is to take him to your local pet store/ animal shelter/etc.

have him play with some of the rabbits there, and see which rabbit he gets along with the most.

    any more tips?

  6. I had my rabbit for 3 years, and introduced an adult neutered female about 18months ago.

They were both a bit wary for a very short time, but both seem very content.

They have the patio to run around on(its got a wall with a gate so they cannot escape)

At night they go into their hutch with a small amount of encouragement.

They both love being around people,if you sunbath they will lay next to you..
