Jill and Annette are paid a total of $630 and are paid at the rate of $11 per hour and $8 per hour respectively. If Annette worked exactly half as many hours as Jill, How many hours did Jill work?

  1. Start by defining your variables.  Let j = Jill's hours.  In that case, Annette's hours must be j/2, since she worked half as many.  Therefore, Jill was paid 11j and Annette was paid 8(j/2) = 4j.  So,

    11j + 4j = 630

    You should be able to solve it from there.


  2. Let x be the number of hours Jill works, then Annette works x/2 hours since we are given that Annette worked exactly half as many hours.

    So we need to solve: 11x + 8(x/2) = 630

    Pay per hour * hours worked = total wage

    So we have, 11x + 4x  = 630
