So I need all my tax information from these last taxes that we just did. Well, I did mine on paper with my boyfriends Grandpa...and I cannot find my copy that we had ANYWHERE! Is there any way that I can look at it online, I was told that I could...but I can't find anything online for that. And I kinda need to turn in my FAFSA tomorrow :S

  1. I could be wrong, but I do not believe that current or previous years' tax return information is available online from the IRS.

If you need an exact copy of the forms that were filed, the IRS requires that you file Form 4506 and submit it by mail. There is a $39 fee and it would take a lot longer than tomorrow for you to receive your requested forms.

The news isn't much better, even if you just need what the IRS calls a "transcript" - it's not the exact forms, but it shows the information that you entered on almost every line of the return. Those are free, and can be ordered by telephone, but the IRS estimates that it will take 10 business days for you to receive a requested transcript.

I may have missed some other IRS program, but to be honest, it doesn't make any sense to me that the IRS would provide internet access to their taxpayer records - the potential risks far outweigh the advantages of providing that type of service.

Did you e-file? Perhaps if you e-filed, it might be possible to get access to the data you provided.

Your best bet is to contact your local IRS office tomorrow morning - the contact info can be found at the page that I linked below.

    Good luck!

  2. As far as I know, you must go down to your local IRS office to get a copy of your tax forms.

  3. Call 1-800-829-1040.  It should ask for your ssn, the select option 2, then option 2 again, it will give you 7 more options but then just stay on the phone and wait for a human.

See if they can fax it to you at the school.  If the person says they can only mail it, say thank you, hang up and start again.  You should get someone who will do this.

Do let them know you need it for school.  Make sure to ask for both your 2007 tax return AND W2's.  If you were selected for verification you will need both.

  4. I'm doing the same thing as you.

Unfortunately, you will have to request a duplicate from the IRS. I believe this can be done either by mail or phone. I'm not sure if they accept online requests...

Either way, it's going to take about two weeks for them to mail you a duplicate of your Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's better than not knowing what to do. I wish you the best of luck!

  5. Call the IRS.  Sometimes they will fax you a "tax transcript" immediately if you can verify the information and they have this capability.  Sometimes you'll get someone who will insist they cant fax you the info... just hang up and dial them again.  You'll get some else... some have fax capability and some don't.

Using a tax transcript is a little harder than the tax form to complete your fafsa because it doesn't have line numbers listed so you have to read carefully what the numbers mean.  If you are selected for verification (meaning you have to turn in tax forms to the school) you will likely have to pay the $40.00 to the irs for a copy of your real tax return.

    Good luck.
