    Governor Dinwiddie of Virginia sent 21 year old George Washington to confront the French in the Ohio country. Washington's mission of 1753 was the first of several unsuccessful forays.  The Virginians' defeat in 1754 at the hands of the French drew the British into the French and Indian War (1754–1760) which roughly corresponded with Europe's Seven Years War of 1756 to 1763.
