Can anyone help me regarding a 1940's style wedding?

My fiancee and i have decided to have a 'small' 1940's themed wedding and we are in the South of England. Have any of you done anything along these lines? I would be grateful for any ideas on any traditional dresses/outfits/styles for bride/groom, table ideas, pics etc etc to get us going with...basically any ideas for this would be great.

The only things i do know is that I don't want to get married in a traditional white dress, we are hopefully looking at the end of September 2009 and this wedding needs to be done as reasonably as possible...none of this £10k lark!!

Thank you all lol x

  1. line of paint along your left leg lol couldnt afford tights back then because of the war, the buffet will be extremely small to because of rationing, and you may want a bomb shelter ready in the graveyard lol

  3. There was rationing in the 1940s so the weding cakes were usually cardboard cutout cake with a cheap sponge underneath because the sugar was rationed

  4. Hello. I am in Southern England too and am having a 30's/40's style renewal of vows. I think you are going to have a great deal of fun planning this. I certainly am! When are you getting married? I am going to have some gorgeous diamante place card holders which are perfect for your theme which I would be happy to lend you and there will probably be other things you could use.  Email me. .

  6. no wedding cake then, remember everything was on ration a three tier fruit wedding cake was virtually unheard of a dummy cake was supplied with a sponge cake underneath,  have fun remember that air raids happen when you don't want them

  7. Get a 1940's style band to play at the wedding and then have a look online at the fashion of the time and have a dress made up similar. Get all your guests to come in 1940's clothing as well.

Try to get some of the older style champagne glasses....get a load of old war films out from blockbuster and pick what you like.
