A mass of 0.10 slug in space is subjected to an external vertical force of 4lb. If the local gravity acceleration is g=30.5fps^2 and if friction effects are neglected, determine the acceleration of the mass if the external vertical force is acting (a)upward and (b)downward.

When you apply a force to a mass, it accelerates. Each force or acceleration can be summed to any others to get the total.

Use Newton's Law:

F = ma

4lb is the force, m = 0.1 slug.

Just add this result to and subtract from the 30.5fps^2.
