A mass of 0.10 slug in space is subjected to an external vertical force of 4lb. If the local gravity acceleration is g=30.5fps^2 and if friction effects are neglected, determine the acceleration of the mass if the external vertical force is acting (a)upward and (b)downward.

Can anyone help me solve this physics problem?

or can you give me a good site for such problems?

  1. When you apply a force to a mass, it accelerates. Each force or acceleration can be summed to any others to get the total.

    Use Newton's Law:

    F = ma

    4lb is the force, m = 0.1 slug.

    Just add this result to and subtract from the 30.5fps^2.
