Aggressive driving has been around since the early decades of this century, from the moment the average number of automobiles on any given roadway rose from 1 to 2. In the most comprehensive national survey on driving behavior it was found that an astounding 80% of drivers are angry most or all of the time while driving. Simple traffic congestion is one cause of irritation, but these days just about everything can get the average driver to tap his horn. More than one-third of respondents to the survey said they get impatient at stoplights or when waiting for a parking space; an additional 25% can’t stand waiting for passengers to get in the car. And 22% said they get mad when a multi-lane highway narrows. So not only the roads are more crowded than ever, but they are crowded with drivers whom science has now discovered to be extremely touchy. This democratization of the highway has occurred simultaneously with a decline in traditional driver’s education.

  1. Aggressive driving has been around since automobiles were created.  The goal of nearly every motorists is to get from point A to point B in as little time as possible, with no one or nothing impeding their progress.  National surveys suggest that 80% of drivers are angry most of the time they are in their automobiles.  The other 20% apparently aren’t really interested in arriving at their destination in a timely manner, or have a carefree life style that doesn’t involve a time schedule.  The usual motives for rising tempers range from traffic congestion, to stoplights, to limited parking spaces, or similar impediments.

The end result being that today’s modern roads are increasingly filled with emotionally irritated drivers whose frustrations can be set off at a mere touch.  Traditional driver’s education courses should now include anger-management information along with the standard rules and regulations.
