Question:

Can anyone help me to decide what are a good "summary" of mental health issues?

I'm doing a project for school on mental health.

It's about mental health awareness, and I obviously can't cover every mental health issue.

So I want a summary, the most common, or important, or overlooked, or anything, of mental health issues.

I need about 4 or 5.

Sorry I haven't explained this properly...

If anyone could help me that would be great!

  2. most common and sometimes mis-diagnosed are anxiety, phobias, panic, PTSD, eating disorders, ADD/ADHD, OCD, depression (various types, eg seasonal, chronic, clinical) and Bipolar 1/2. These are either chronic (genetic) or circumstantial. Usually they are due to chemical imbalances in the brain of the neurotransmitters, especially norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, serotonin. Therapy is usually the first step of treatment, then comes various medications that try to balance the imbalance and if the patient is resistant to medicines, ECT, electro-convulsive therapy is an option where small seizures are produced in the brain under controlled circumstances (anesthesia, glyco). How exactly ECT corrects the imbalance is unknown but ECT is a more safe and effective treatment than thought of in the past. Schizophrenia, autism, amnesia, alzheimers, personality disorders and paranoia are some examples of more severe mental disorders. Wikipedia will be a good resourse if you need more information. goodluck

  3. Some of the answers given to you are great.

I am bipolar.  My suggestions are based upon my experiences.

One area that may be of interest is the availability of mental health care, especially looking at the varying levels that a person might find going state to state.  I live in Nebraska and while there are some cutbacks I have found services readily available.  My sister, on the other hand, lives in Arizona.  She says that most people down there do not fully understand mental health and that there is limited funding.  She says that I am lucky to be in Nebraska.

Funding these services is a real problem.  Some people do not understand the complexities of mental health and would like to see limited money going to agencies that provide mental health services.

Another problem which coincides with the above topic is health insurance.  Some people can seek out professional mental health providers because they have the insurance to do so.  Even then, some insurance companies put a cap on just how much they will cover.

Other people who cannot afford proper mental healthcare have to go to community supported agencies or faith-base operations.  These are usually available at no or little cost.  You can find them listed in the  yellow pages under some mental health category.

Try contacting these resources directly. This will give you a good source of information.  I am sure that most of them are  more than willing to talk to you about services available, social aspects, such as stigma, and funding.  You might find that there is a limited number of people that can be help thoroughly.  Again, this is usually due to funding and space requirements.

Another possible community help can be found in the clergy.  While they may not be trained in psycology. most have had some counseling training.  Especially if a person has a minor problem, talking to them can be very helpful and theraputic.  I know this first hand.  After all, they usually have a direct line to the Almighty Healer.

You didn't say what level of school you are in or what class this is for.  While defining and explaining  different mental disorders is a good choice, consider attacking the social/economic aspect.  This may be a little deeper subject.  However, I feel that if you do your research right, you will be guaranteed  an "A"! :-)

    Good luck.  Study hard!

Go with the grace of God.

  4. I'm really not sure as to what you are asking but I'm going to throw some things out there.

Depression is probably the most common. Women have the "baby blues" after giving birth which is very common and can be overlooked. Or just people who have long bouts of depression could be a good topic.

Bipolar or manic depression is hard to diagnose at times and can be overlooked.

Schizophrenia is a severe form of mental illness.

By looking these up you should run into a few others. Hope this has helped some. And good luck with your assignment.

I just thought about borderline personality disorder. Or people that are passive/aggressive. A couple other people on here have some good ideas too. I'm sure your paper and anaylsis is going to be great!!!

No offense smitty but Wikipedia is starting to be banned as a source. I'm in college right now and they will not accept any type of source from them. BUT.....sometimes at the end of the pages of Wikipedia they have other reliable sources that you can look up and use.

And I like the ADD or ADHD as one because it's hard to diagnose and getting more common and common. But sometimes I truly believe children are labeled that and it's not an accurate diagnosis. I've worked with docs that believe that as well.  Kinda tricky on that but that would be the beauty of putting it on the assignment.

  5. You could go with things like:

Mental health in the early grades.

The stigma of mental illness; are we still in the "dark ages"?

Anyway, good luck. I have written many papers on various topics about mental illness and know how difficult it is to narrow a topic down.
