Whenever I try to record numbers in any cell, such as a baseball score, i.e. 9-0, 4-3, etc, it changes to a seemingly random date such as Sept-00, and so forth as soon as I tab to another cell. What did I do wrong?

  1. MS Excel 2003:

Your cells are not formatted accordingly, After typing in 0-9 press enter. Than right-click that cell (0-9 cell) and choose format cell. From the numbers Tab choose 'General' in the Category and then OK. It should appear as a number (i.e 0-9) itself.

You can always use MS help. Cheers!

  2. Right click, then select format cells.  Change the type of cell to "text" and that should solve your problem.

  3. Hello,

Open up your Excel sheet, on your keyboard press and hold the keys "CTRL" and "A" the CTRL is under your shift key, and well you know where the A key is, so its CTRL+A and that should highlight your spreadsheet, now right click the sheet and go to FORMAT CELLS, then on the left side panel click on TEXT and click OKAY, now try typing your scores. It should work just fine :)

  4. I think Excel is programmed to default read numbers and dashes as dates. Try formatting the cells or writing the scores as, for example 9 to 0.

  5. Format the cells as Text and not as a number or date.
