Can anyone help me with getting started on researching my husband's family Pottinger of South Shields UK?

I have his mum and dad's name, I have his father's parent's names and I have his mother's parent's names but just don't know where to go from here.

If you could give a little more information as to what sort of help you are asking for, such has  just to get you started, or a specific time in your family history. You are going the right way, you work backwards from your husband.
