When there are sharps and flats in a piano tune, if there is a flat sign on an E, does it mean ALL E's are flats , or just that specific E?

  1. The key signature shown at the beginning of the piece will tell you which notes should be played sharp or flat throughout the piece. For example the key signature for G major is one sharp - F# which means that every time you see an F note you have to remember to play F#. However, if anny other notes appear in the piece with a sharp or flat sign, this is a one off and the note should be played as written.

  2. If the sharp or flat symbol is in the key signature (at the far left of the start of the line of music, over with the clef) that means that every E (or whatever note) is flat or sharp for the entire song unless otherwise noted with a different symbol.  If the symbol is on the note itself that means that only that particular note is sharp or flat.

  3. Just the note the sign is on, that was the rule when i was in chior, i assume it's the same.

  4. If you have a flat sign on an E in the key signature (at the beginning of the piece near the the time signature), then all Es are flat.

If, though, you have a flat sign on an E, all of the Es in that particular measure are flat (unless you have a natural sign).

    Hope this helps! :)
