Can anyone help me with this word problem?

I'm not really good at doing algebraic word problems, and I found this one on a practice test. It says

11. Simon arrived at work at 8:15 A.M. and left work at 10: 30 P.M. If Simon gets paid by the hour at a rate of $10 and time and ½ for any hours worked over 8 in a day. How much did Simon get paid?

Can anyone tell me how to solve a problem like this?

  1. I think the answer is $173.75

It's not too complicated, just confusing. I'd try to explain how I figured it out, but I absolutely hate and cannot figure out algebra, so I choose to solve these problems with common sense rather than with a formula. I guess that wouldn't really help your situation

  2. First you need to figure out how many hours he worked altogether. He obviously worked a very long 13 hour and 15 minute shift.  Then for the first 8 hours, you times it by 10-that's his wages.  After that he get's paid 15 an hour, and multiply this buy the remaining hours he worked-don't forget to add in the decimal point, make it a dollar sign and don't forget about that 15 minutes he worked as well.

    Good luck

  3. 14 hours and 15 minutes total work time.

    Minus 8 hours

    = 6 hours and 15 minutes X $15 for overtime = $93.75

    Plus

    $10 x 8= $80 for regular working hours

    Answer $93.75 + $80=  $173.75

  4. He gets paid about 143.00 give or take a little.  What you have to do is calculate how many hours he worked in all.  Well if he gets paid 10.50 extra for every hour he works over, calculate how many hours he works over.  He worked 6 Hrs and 15 minutes over.  I got that like this

    14 hrs 15 minutes - 8 hrs=6 hrs and 15 minutes.

Then calculate how much money he made just in an 8 hour day by multiplying 10x8=80.00.  80.00 is how much he makes in 8hrs.  Well if he worked 6 hrs and 15 minutes over then multipy 10.50x6=63.00

Then ad 80.00+63.00=143.00.  Hope I helped you!!

  5. There is more than one way to solve this problem, but here is how I did it...

First, you figure out how many hours he's worked: 14.25hrs.

8:15am to 8:15pm is 12hrs (half a day), and since he worked to 10:30pm, that's 2hrs and 15mins.  15mins is a quarter of an hour, so when you add all that together, you get 14.25hrs.

Next, you multiply $10 by 14.25hrs, which will give you $142.50.

Simon worked 14.25hrs and gets paid $10 per hour, so you multiply them together.  Since 14.25 is multiplied by 10, you could just move the decimal point one place to the right.

Then, you figure out how much time and a half he is getting paid and then add that to $142.50.

14.25hrs subtracted by 8 (his regular hours without the overtime) is 6.25hrs of overtime (all the extra hours after 8hrs).  Simon makes $10 per hour, and half of that is $5.  You then multiply $5 to the extra hours he worked: 6.25hrs X $5 = $31.25.

Last, add the remaining amounts together, how much money he made total and the overtime:

    $142.50 + $31.25 = $173.75

    I hope that helped!
