I am really interested in looking up information on my great grandfather Philip Bowyer Adderley. He was born around 1898 and died before i was born. My grandad refuses to talk about him.

Many thanks

  1. where did he live, Country, Town, etc.

    was it bilston, staffs, uk.

  2. phillip bower adderley, the birth cert is sep 1898 wolverhampton, volume 6b, page 693

this shows him living at home with his mum and dad in staffs, wolverhampton, he is 2 because the census was taken in april i think that year. now you have the names of his parents, you can check that on the birth cert when you order it and it arrives to make sure it is correct, if not, then back to the starting board, once you are sure who it is, you can hopefully trace him forward

  3. You can look up vital records on web sites such as Ancestry.com or FreeBMD.rootsweb.com depending on what country he was born in.  Or try the 1900/01 census for the place in which he was born and you might be able to find the family.

  4. Unless you put it in your question, we can't tell what country you are in. It is the most frustrating thing Yahoo does. It doesn't matter if you go into domestic Yahoo or one of the International Yahoos (UK, Australia, Canada, India . . .), all of the questions in English go into one big "pot".

If he was in the UK, this looks like it is about him.

He was a soldier in WWI, a private in the Worcestershire Regiment. You can buy a copy of his his medal card for 3.50 pounds. (I haven't used the site. It might mean you can buy access to a PDF of his medal card for your three pounds and fifty pence.)

  5. If you wanted to find out information about your ancestors, genesreunited.co.uk is a good site. People can join genesreunited.co.uk and put their family tree on there without a subscription. But if you paid the subscription, I am not sure of the exact amount but it is around £9, you can write what they call a thread to other genesreunited members on there asking if they could help you and there are some helpful people on there. They would probably look up the information on Ancestry where they would check the 1901 census. I know he would only be three then but you could find out about his parents and it would be a start.

  6. I have found one birth entry for you registered in Wolverhampton in 1898.

He appears on the 1901 census with his parents living in Bilston.

I would start by accessing these records via genes reunited or ancestry.co.uk
