  1. Have you remembered to plug an ADSL filter if required between the new phone and the socket. If you have ADSL broadband then these are required for all phones, even if you're not going to connect a computer to that socket. (They stop the broadband and voice calls interfering with each other).

Edit: I'm assuming from your description that both sockets are on the same line/phone number.

  2. U dont have broadband or internet on the new line. Is it a diff number? Thats why. Ur broadband/Internet provider doesnt know that number so ur not connected.

  3. You're in luck. This is a simple one to fix.

If the downstairs socket is an extension of the upstairs line (or vice versa) then you must fit an inline filter.

They're only a couple of quid each from almost anywhere that sells broadband equipment or telephone extension accessories. Try Maplin Electronics (www.maplin.com).

It is the case that if ANY socket on your telephone extensions network is used by an internet modem then ALL sockets must be equipped with a filter before you can plug in a phone.

This is because the internet modem and telephone instruments use only very slightly different frequency bands when communicating on the same telephone line. The filters prevent the devices from interfering with each other.

  4. micro filter missing or faulty new phone
