Can anyone helpe me understand the 5-1 plan?

I play in position 3 ( and I'm a good blocking ) but i don't understand when to go to position 4 and when to position 2 ?? I mean when do I have to change my position ?

  1. If you "base" position is 3, you should stay at 3 most of the time unless:

    1> when any team is serving you "start" at position 4 or 2, you take one pass before switching to 3;

    2> when your coach set up a special play, so that you slice into 2 or let the player in position 4 come in hit middle and you cross to 4 to hit outside. This is mainly to confuse your opponent.

    3> if your outside hitter starts in position 2 when serve receive, you will need to take care of the first outside hit at position 4.

    4> when your setter is not so good at blocking, you get switched to position 2 in defense to block your opponent's outside hitter.

    5> when you are not in the mood to hit middle quick-set :)
