I was given this rifle from my dad, when my husband returned from Iraq. It has 1905 stamped at the chamber area. It also has what seems to be a Crown, in a few areas.I believe the writing under the crown has calligraphy letters? There is the numbers .2829 , and then a series of #'s we believe may be serial number. Starts with 7##### Its a bolt action, with a wierd slot for feedtray? Ammunition loader. It says no words ANYWHERE. just numbers on a few spots and then it seems like every piece has its own letter. There are #'s scattered throughout. But no groups or clusters of letters/numbers. It has been in my family for many years.I was told is was originally sent home from a war? We got it from canada. Please any info of pictures or links would help us so much. We've searched for what the markings mean etc, but have turned up nothing. My husband and I are baffeled! Thanks.

  1. its probably a 1905 .30 Springfield Rifle Pre-WWI

  2. with out a pic im just guessing but when you said wierd feed tray,if the feed tray is on the right  side of the rifle ,kinda a flip open deal and you put the shells in and plip closed.it is a 30-40 krag jorgason ,not sure of the spelling.commonly called the 30 40 krag.it preseded the 1903 springfield as the standard issue rifle for the us army.was in  use maybe three years till the US adopted the 1903.Nice collectors piece not overly expensive.I think you can still get ammo for it.but take it to a gunsmith to get it checked out if you have any plans on shooting it

  3. this may not be of much help, but it looks like anything will help you. The crown sounds familiar, but i cant remember if its a proofing stamp or a makers stamp. it probably is a .30-06 or even a 30 40 as meantioned above. Honestly, your best bet would be to take it to a gunsmith and see if they can get a positive ID for you or atleast point you in the direction of an apraiser. Both can get you an ID on the weapon, but the gunsmith can also fix any problematic parts if there are any. It sounds like you got an historic piece, though if its a 30-06 or a 30 40, its not going to be an antique for the reason that the rounds it fires are still manufactured. take it in and have a professional have a look-see at it. Good luck to ya.

  4. Give us a pic and you will have an answer in minutes

  5. judging from the year 1905, and it being a bolt action, and it is thought to be from a war, and also assuming that when you say it has a weird feed tray, which i am guessing it opens up on the right side of the rifle, my inpression is that you may have an old 30/40 krag jorgensen rifle, alos simply called by some the krag.although they fire black power cartridges, which you almost have to reload for now, they were built to last, wiht many over 100 years old still in use today. these were the standard issue military rifle used in the spanish-american war. this is the weapon that teddy risevelt used in his infamous charge up san juan hill. thye have all the power you need to take most big game in n american, with the possible exception of grizzly bear. these were the predessr to the modern day mauser rifle. they had only one locking lug on the bolt, wereas the mauser had too. i hope this helps

  6. 1905, bolt action, with a slot, which sounds to me like the cutout for a striper clip, and the crown (crest), I'd guess an early Mauser, ... possibly Portugese, Spanish, or Swedish (to name a few). But as said before, your description isn't good enough for an exact answer. If you could attach a good clear picture of the overall rifle and another of the crest, you could get a more precise answer and some links to the history/value of the rifle.
