Can anyone identify this baby black and red snake?

This baby snake bit two of my cats (which are fine now). It was black with a red diamond-like pattern on the sides of it, with a cream colored stomach.

It is a harmless northern water snake. It was completely unnecessary to kill it. I hope you feel tough. The only way it would have bitten the cats would have been if they were attacking it, so they deserved to get bitten.
