I live in Nicaragua which is in Central America. I found this snake while showering with it! I'm 9 months pregnant and I would like to know more about this snake; for example, it's name, is it venomous, etc. especially now that there is a baby around! I'd prefer not to kill any snake if it's not venomous. The snake looked like a baby, it was roughly 18 inches long and maybe a half inch thick. It's whole body was black (head included) apart from the yellow rings. The locals refer to it as a "coral *****" (black coral) and say it's quite venomous, but online I found no such snake. Please help!

  1. I believe it's a Black-Banded Cat-Eyed Snake (Leptodeira nigrofasciata).

On the following website, it states that it's name in Spanish is Falso Coral *****.

It isn't thought to be very venomous, although not much is known about it's venom. There's information on this site about First Aid treatment, in the event of a bite:

  2. That's a male black coral. Very venomous even in it's youth. If you got bit you would not be posting here about it. You would be in emergency. Glad your ok. Best thing to do is capture it and release it as far away from your town as possible. Or take it to your local animal shelter for verification, testing, tagging and release.
