Can anyone idnetify this snake?

Okay I saw this snake when I was in Northern Michiagan. It was black with a yellow stripe going down its back it was about 18 inches long and the under-side of it was white. Does anyone know what kind of snake this was

  3. Yes it's a garter snake. They're not aggressive.

  4. its not a common garter if it was black and yellow. this would have to be a butlers garter snake

  5. It's a common garter snake....found all over the US. Non poisonous. Good for the garden.
