  1. 1)   For an absolute monarch, Philip II has historically retained an excellent reputation among the Spanish people themselves.  Most Spaniards regard Philip II as their Solomon and call him "the prudent king" (el rey prudente).

    2)  In 1555, Charles V ceded to Philip the Low Countries (the Netherlands and Belgium), the crowns of Castille, Aragon, and Sicily.  Philip ceded the Low Countries to his daughter Isabella in 1598.

    3) As defender of the Roman Catholic faith, Philip safeguarded religious unity in Spain, mercilessly suppressing Lutheran heresy notably in Valladolid and Seville.  Indeed, he succeeded in exterminating Protestantism from Spain and the Spanish Low Countries (Belgium), but the northern Low Countries (the Netherlands) were lost to Roman Catholicism forever.  He also exiled Christianized Muslims from Spain in 1571.

    4) Philip II conquered Portugal in 1580; Spain maintained Iberian unity from 1580 to 1640.

    5) Joining the Holy League, the Spanish during Philip's reign inflicted a major defeat on the Turks at Lepanto in October 1571, ending Turkish dominion over the Mediterranean.

Of course, all these achievements are overshadowed in English history by the English defeat of the Spanish Aramada in 1588, which began the Spanish navy's decline.

    1. & 2.  He led global exploration and colonial expansion across the Atlantic and the Pacific, leading Spain to being, for a long time, the foremost European and global power.

"In the early part of his reign, Philip was concerned with the rising power of the Ottoman Empire under Suleiman the Magnificent. Fear of Islamic domination in the Mediterranean caused him to pursue an aggressive foreign policy.

Philip II organized a Holy League between Spain and the Republic of Venice, the Republic of Genoa, the Papal States, the Duchy of Savoy and the Knights of Malta. The Holy League ended the threat of Ottoman(Islamic) domination of the Mediterranean ."

    4. He consolidated Spain's overseas empire, succeeded in massively increasing the importation of silver in the face of English, Dutch and French privateering.

    5. He succeeded in uniting Portugal and Spain through personal union. He dealt successfully with a crisis that could have led to the secession of Aragon.
