A couple of years ago BBC2 showed a documentary (series of documentaries?) in the evening which showed the development of castle building in the middle ages. I remember it featured crusader castles in the middle east and had quite a lengthy piece on the English built castles in Wales (culminating with Beaumaris Castle which it claimed to be the pinnacle of castle building technology- yet soon made redundant by cannon). The documentary explained why spiral staircases in castles always twist one way, yet never the other (so that people coming up the stairs are unable to raise swords, yet people coming down have the space to hack intruders), and it explained development in systems of interior halls and court yards where intruders would get trapped and fired at from all sides.

I searched in vein for its title (gut instinct told me it was presented by Dan Cruickshank, yet i find no mention of it on his IMDB page).

Does anyone know the program?
