It's a picture of a saint, who's holding his own tongue (it's been cut out), with a boy who can't be more than 8. The description at The Art Institute in Chicago (where it currently is) says that the elder saint inspired the boy (who because a saint later, I guess) to martyrdom. If you're familiar with the Art Institute, it's right next to The Assumption Of The Virgin by El Greco.

I really liked it (it was gross, but really well done) and for the life of me I can't remember what it was called. It think it was something like "Saint ______ and Saint ______", if that's any help

  1. These are the stories of the Saints (and their tongues).

I've searched the museum site and can't find it using the

any of the names listed below. It's likely not in the online

collection or perhaps it's on loan. Since you know its location

I would simply call the museum.... and ask:)

Saint John Nepomucene, tongue was found incorrupt 336 years after his death, because he had laid down his life as a Catholic priest.

Saint Christina of Lake Bolsena, in Italy, who had her tongue cut out because she sang beautiful hymns to Jesus and Mary.

St Livinus (or Lebwin), an Irishman who was ordained (some say baptised) by St Augustine of Canterbury . In the end his tongue was torn out in an effort to stop his preaching

St Anthony, When they opened the tomb to translate the relics in 1263, little remained of Il Santo except his tongue... St Bonaventure performed  the ceremony.

St. Alphius had his tongue torn from his mouth.
